How to make the Perfect Melomakarona – Greek Honey Cookies

Introduction:

Embark on a culinary journey to Greece with this traditional Melomakarona recipe. These honey-soaked cookies, often associated with the holiday season, blend sweet, spicy, and nutty flavors to create a treat that's as rich in taste as it is in cultural heritage.

Ingredients:


For the Cookies:

  • 1 cup olive oil

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup orange juice

  • 1/4 cup brandy

  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt


For the Syrup:

  • 1 cup honey

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 3-4 whole cloves

  • 1 orange, sliced

For Garnish:

  • Finely chopped walnuts

Instructions:


Step 1: Preparing the Dough

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, sugar, orange juice, brandy, and orange zest.

  3. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.

  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms.

Step 2: Shaping and Baking

  1. Take small portions of dough and shape them into oval cookies.

  2. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each cookie.

  3. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 3: Preparing the Syrup

  1. While cookies are baking, combine honey, sugar, water, cinnamon stick, cloves, and orange slices in a saucepan.

  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.

Step 4: Soaking the Cookies

  1. As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, dip them in the hot syrup, allowing them to soak for about 30 seconds each.

  2. Remove and place on a wire rack to cool.
